Meet the New DoorBird D22 Series: The Next Generation of DoorBird Intercoms
The new DoorBird D22 Series builds on the proven D21 platform with a 5MP camera, improved HDR and audio, upgraded access control and a brilliantly backwards-compatible upgrade path for many existing D21 installations.
DoorBird has introduced the new D22 Series, the next generation of its premium IP video intercom range. Building on the proven design, German-made construction and integration flexibility of the popular D21 Series, the D22 range delivers meaningful improvements to video quality, audio performance, access control and system integration.
For new projects, the D22 Series offers a more capable and future-ready entrance solution for homes, gates, apartment buildings and commercial properties. For existing D21 owners, the transition is equally good news: D21 systems will continue to operate and be supported, while the D2200E Engineering Edition provides a straightforward upgrade path that can retain many of the components already installed.
A new 5MP camera
The most noticeable improvement is the move from the D21 Series' 720p camera to a new 5-megapixel camera sensor. The higher-resolution sensor captures substantially more detail, helping users recognise visitors, vehicles and activity around an entrance more clearly.
This is particularly valuable at front gates, larger properties and commercial entrances, where the person calling may be positioned further from the intercom or where a wider view of the surrounding area is useful.
Improved HDR for difficult lighting
Entrances rarely have perfect lighting. A visitor may be standing beneath a shaded portico with bright daylight behind them, or a gate may face directly into the morning or afternoon sun.
The D22 Series' improved High Dynamic Range processing creates a more balanced image in these challenging conditions. Faces and entrance details remain clearer across bright and dark areas, providing a more useful picture throughout the day.
Clearer sound and greater volume
DoorBird has also improved the audio processing and speaker output of the D22 range. Conversations sound clearer and the increased volume makes visitors easier to hear at noisy roadside gates, busy commercial entrances and locations with wind or traffic noise.
Better audio can make a significant difference in everyday use. An intercom is only effective when both parties can understand each other comfortably, without visitors needing to repeat themselves or stand unusually close to the door station.
What happens to the DoorBird D21 Series?
The D21 range is being progressively replaced by corresponding D22 models. For example, the D2101V is succeeded by the D2201V, the D2101KV by the D2201KV and the D21DKV by the D22DKV.
That does not mean existing D21 intercoms will suddenly stop working or become unsupported. Installed D21 systems will continue to operate and receive support. Some D21 products may also remain available during the transition, making it important to consider the requirements and budget of each project when choosing between remaining D21 stock and the newer D22 equivalent.
Brilliantly backwards compatible
One of the best features of the D22 transition is that DoorBird has protected the investment customers have already made in the D21 platform. Corresponding D21 and D22 models share the same fascias and mounting backboxes in many configurations, helping installers retain the architectural components already fitted to a wall, gate post or entrance structure.
This compatibility is especially valuable where a premium stainless-steel or custom-finished fascia has been installed, or where removing and replacing an embedded backbox would require unnecessary building work.
Compatibility does depend on the exact models and configuration, so the relevant part numbers should always be confirmed before ordering.
Upgrade an existing D21 with the D2200E Engineering Edition
The DoorBird D2200E Engineering Edition creates a practical upgrade path for compatible D21 installations. Rather than replacing the complete door station, the existing D2100E electronic module can be removed and replaced with the new D2200E module.
The existing fascia, backbox, call button or buttons, and keypad where fitted can be retained. This allows many D21 owners to move to the latest D22 technology without replacing the complete intercom or disturbing the surrounding architectural installation.
It is a brilliantly backwards-compatible approach: the visible parts of the original system can remain in place while the core electronics are brought up to the new generation. For customers who have invested in a carefully integrated D21 entrance, the D2200E offers a cleaner, faster and often more economical route to an upgrade.
A better DoorBird, built on a proven foundation
The DoorBird D22 Series improves the features customers use every day while preserving the design qualities that made the D21 range so successful. The sharper 5MP camera and improved HDR provide a clearer view of visitors, enhanced audio makes conversations easier, and the upgraded access-control and integration options give installers more freedom when designing connected entrances.
Just as importantly, the shared architectural components and D2200E upgrade module mean the arrival of the D22 Series does not leave existing D21 owners behind. It provides a considered transition to newer technology while protecting much of the original installation.
