The next generation of DoorBird’s premium intercom range

For years, the DoorBird D21 Series has been one of the most flexible and beautifully engineered IP intercom ranges available. Its durable construction, premium finishes and extensive integration options have made it a popular choice for prestige homes, gated properties, apartment buildings and commercial projects throughout Australia.

The new DoorBird D22 Series builds on that proven foundation. It retains the architectural styling and German-made construction of the D21 range while introducing significant improvements to video quality, sound, access control and professional integration. As the D22 range is introduced, corresponding D21 models will progressively be replaced by their new-generation D22 equivalents.

Importantly, the D22 Series has been designed to share the same fascias and mounting backboxes as the corresponding D21 models. This helps maximise compatibility with existing installations and makes future upgrades more straightforward, often allowing the installed housing and architectural finish to be retained while the intercom technology is updated.

What's Improved?

Sharper 5MP camera

The D22 Series introduces a new 5-megapixel camera, replacing the 720p camera used in the D21 range. The higher-resolution sensor captures substantially more detail, making it easier to recognise visitors, vehicles and activity around the entrance.

Improved HDR

Enhanced High Dynamic Range produces a more balanced picture in difficult lighting. Visitors remain clearer when standing in shade, beneath an entry canopy or in front of bright sunlight.

Clearer, louder audio

Improved sound processing and greater speaker volume make conversations easier to understand, particularly at roadside gates, commercial entrances and other noisy locations.

Next-generation access control

The upgraded RFID reader supports a broader range of credentials, while Bluetooth Low Energy adds convenient new access options using compatible DoorBird devices.

Expanded system integration

Wiegand, OSDP and RS485 support provides greater compatibility with professional access-control platforms and third-party security systems.

Greater installation flexibility

Additional configurable inputs and two freely configurable relays give integrators more options for connecting doors, gates, sensors and other external devices.

What do the D22 improvements mean in everyday use?

The D22 Series is not simply a specification update. Its improvements make the intercom noticeably better at the tasks customers use every day.

The new camera captures more detail and produces a clearer picture when an entrance has strong sunlight, shade or changing light conditions. Improved audio makes it easier for visitors and occupants to understand each other, while the upgraded RFID reader provides faster and more dependable credential recognition.

For installers and system integrators, the addition of Bluetooth, Wiegand, OSDP, RS485 and configurable inputs opens the D22 Series to a wider range of access-control and building-automation applications. The result is a more capable intercom for both straightforward residential installations and sophisticated integrated projects.

What does this mean for existing D21 owners?

The introduction of the new D22 Series doesn't mean existing D21 intercoms are being left behind. D21 systems will continue to work and be supported, but DoorBird has also provided an excellent upgrade path for owners who want to take advantage of the new D22 technology.

The DoorBird D2200E upgrade module is designed to replace the existing electronic module inside a compatible D21 intercom. Rather than replacing the complete door station, the D21 module can simply be removed and replaced with the new D2200E, while retaining your existing fascia, backbox, call button and keypad (where fitted).

This means many existing D21 installations can gain the benefits of the new generation without replacing the architectural components already installed in the wall or gate. It's a brilliantly backwards-compatible approach—protecting the original investment in a D21 system while providing a straightforward path to the latest DoorBird technology.

Frequently asked questions

Have questions? We’re here to help

Title

Is the DoorBird D21 Series being discontinued?

The D21 range is being progressively replaced by corresponding new-generation D22 models. Some D21 products may remain available during the transition and existing D21 installations will continue to operate.

Will my existing D21 backbox fit a D22 intercom?

Many corresponding D21 and D22 models use shared mounting housings, but compatibility depends on the exact models. Confirm the part numbers before ordering.

Is the D22 camera 5MP?

Yes. D22 models use a new 5-megapixel camera sensor with HD video, an ultra-wide-angle view, HDR and infrared night vision.

Can the D22 connect to third-party access control?

The D22 range supports DoorBird’s open API and SIP, together with professional interfaces including Wiegand, OSDP and RS485. Compatibility depends on the third-party system and its configuration.

Can I replace my D21 without replacing the entire installation?

Yes absolutely. The D2200E module can easily replace the D2100E module in your existing system. Therefore you upgrade to the newest technology, but retain your backbox, fascia, call button(s), and keypad if you have one.

Which D22 model replaces my D21 intercom?

Most model numbers follow a straightforward pattern: for example, the D2101KV is replaced by the D2201KV, while the D21DKV is replaced by the D22DKV.
